Tower ventured to the Great Rift's lava spill in southeastern ID in response to the BP Oil spill. The 2011 Gulf spill was of the same scope and magnitude as the lava flow covering this section of the great rift-- more than 750-thousand acres. Satellite views of both landscapes were practically indistinguishable from each other; both landscapes were covered with far-reaching, iridescent black. Tower mixed oil with tar for this series. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve kindly allowed Tower to be their first artist-in-residence for part of her painting season at this location.

As a response to the BP Oil spill, Tower painted a landscape series with oil and asphault in Idaho at Craters of the Moon National Monument. Craters resembled the oil spill in satellite imagery being 750-thousand acres of black lava.

Tower was accustomed to wearing assigned park uniforms in the National Park System and performing in front of the public.
